Botulinium Treatments from Douglas McGeorge
Botulinum toxin, (Botox® or Dysport®), can be used to selectively paralyse muscles of the face, to prevent contraction and furrowing of the overlying skin, reducing wrinkling. The procedure is a safe, effective way of treating some of the symptoms of ageing.
The toxin is injected directly into the muscle and so an understanding of facial anatomy is vital in obtaining good results. Common areas for botox treatment include the horizontal forehead furrows, the vertical lines between the eyebrows and the “crow’s feet” creases around the eyes. The toxin also interferes with sweat production and can be used for excessive sweating of the armpits.
Reasons for Considering Botulinum Toxin Treatment:
- Excessive facial wrinkles.
- Heavy wrinkles or furrows in your forehead.
- Vertical “frown lines” between your eyebrows.
- Small wrinkles or “crow’s feet” around your eyes.
- Excessive armpit sweating.
Treatment can be carried out in the consulting suite, which has been a large reason for its popularity. The procedure works by paralysing the facial muscles beneath the skin that create wrinkling. Typically a small amount of botulinum toxin, (Botox®), is injected into the area of the wrinkle.Botox® works by blocking the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscles, thereby relaxing them.
As the underlying facial muscles relax and the skin begins to smooth out. In the face the effects of botox treatment will last up to to 6 months. Treatments for armpit sweating can last 9-12 months. As the nerves recovers and the muscle starts to function again, the procedure can be repeated.
Patients generally return to their normal activities immediately after the procedure. Bruising from the Botulinum injections is unusual, but, if it does occur, can be covered with make up.
Limitations and Complications
Complications following treatment are rare. As mentioned above, bruising can occur. The treatment effect normally takes between 24-72 hours to be seen. Sometimes the toxin does not completely remove the muscle movement, or reduce sweating enough, and a top up may required.
If the injection is put into the wrong area or too larger volume is injected then it can interfere with the function of other muscle groups leaving, perhaps, a drooping eyelid or brow.
This is something rarely seen in experienced hands and is fortunately self limiting. Douglas McGeorge can offer Botox to anyone in the UK and particularly those near Chester, Manchester, Liverpool and the Wirral.
